Its been a long time, but the first race of 2017 is done! By now really I should’ve done about 4/5 already, nevertheless I couldn’t really help it.

In the first few weeks in January I was bed bound with tonsillitis, then as soon as I had recovered, I was back in Cardiff for a break between my semesters. Then I was off to York to see some mates.

So in conclusion, every Saturday in January I’ve been either ill or travelling across the UK. Despite that, I’ve managed to get some training in but not as much as I would’ve liked.

Anyway, I woke up this morning absolutely starving. Some experts say to eat light prior to a race, but that peanut butter on toast was way too tempting!

Luckily there were no stitches or anything like that. It was absolutely freezing this morning and it felt like an age until the race actually started.

For some reason, at the start line I felt pretty nervous. Not sure if it was because it was my first parkrun in a while, needless to say once things got going those nerves went.

The first 2K was quite enjoyable in spite of the conditions, with frosty rain battering my face. A couple of older runners made up the pack at the front. I’ve noticed more experienced runners, especially in Hastings, keep it more or less at the same tempo.

At no point did I really feel like I was overcommitting. My start was too fast as per, but getting three seconds off my PB is decent considering I haven’t raced in a while.

It’s going to be a hard few days of training next week as I prepare for my second East Sussex Cross Country League on Sunday. It’s a big one as my result will be in the local paper. Better make sure I do myself justice!
