It was definitely two points dropped for Villa today. We were 2-0 up in under ten minutes, but our defensive errors cost us.
Inside four minutes, Keinan Davis was taken down in the area, allowing Albert Adomah to slot home from the spot for his 11th of the season.
Soon after we were laughing. Mile Jedinak headed in a whipped free-kick from Robert Snodgrass. It felt too good to be true.
And it was. Former Blues striker Clayton Donaldson beat the offside trap before lofting the ball over Sam Johnstone.
United were completely back in the game. The away side were constantly working to win possession back while Villa dropped off.
Then it all went wrong. Mark Duffy played a long ball which looked easy enough for Jedinak to control. But the makeshift centre-back completely missed it, allowing Donaldson to pounce. The striker finishing low through Johnstone’s legs.
It’s a mistake which you might be able to get away with in midfield, but certainly not in defence.
But Villa were close to regaining the lead before half-time. A deep cross from Ahmed Elmohamady found Adomah at the far post but the Ghanaian headed across goal when he should’ve scored.
However, the Northerners looked more likely to go into the break with the lead. John Lundstrum stinging the palms of Sam Johnstone.
United carried their intensity into the second half. Johnstone had to tip over a clean shot by Duffy, prior to Leon Clark going close with a diving header.
Our best chance of the second 45 came to Davis. The big man was limited in chances but maybe should’ve scored a close range header.
As the second half went on we saw more of the ball but weren’t creating. Gabby and Scott Hogan were brought on but we couldn’t get into their box, partly because United are a very organized team defensively.
Even Jack Grealish, who grew into the game, struggled to unpick the locks.
I don’t like to say it, but we’re stuck in a bit of a rut at the moment and the boo boys are coming back. We really really need to win soon.
Tommy Elphick – Clearly Jedinak isn’t a centre-back, so it’s baffling as to why Elphick isn’t playing. Why are we paying his wages if he’s not on the pitch?
*Sidenote – Chester was excellent again, if he gets injured we’re screwed.
